To age is the most natural thing to occur to people. With the age, there are added responsibilities as well as certain obligations. However, legally age is a very important criterion for so many things. Age discrimination has been accepted as a legal way to attain many things on a day to day basis. Even if we do not recognize its implications in everyday life, we are following certain norms depending on our age.

When it comes to certain basic human rights like voting, working or schooling, age factor is the most vital factor considered for validity of these things. While children enjoy certain privileges like reduced fairs, they also are deprived of some basic rights, rightly so because of their immaturity in these areas. But while we consider facts related to elderly, age discrimination most of the times invokes anger from these people. Making this discrimination unlawful, the ADEA (Age Discrimination in Employment Act) pleaded that age discrimination for workers over forty years is unjust act and should be condemned. Though it was restricted for works in certain areas, this law made age discrimination factor more conspicuous over the years.

In the field of medicine, geriatric age group faces age discrimination again that should be condemned by the medical faculty itself but the reverse is true unfortunately. The basic age discrimination that occurs with the old patients is that they are not given apt attention when it comes to some trivial ailment. Even for severe illnesses like cancer, older women or men are spared of critical care and are given only the basic medicinal care. Thus the older patients in the health care system suffer a lot. Poor rapport with the physician in charge or poor attention given by physician considering the advancing age factor as natural process of aging, the older people are always at stake when it comes to health care.

But like many other things, age is also an individualistic thing and does not occur ion everyone with similar pace. So, such age discrimination is condemned at all levels by many people. “Age gracefully and know all your rights” should be the motto of older adults!

Bleeding occurs when a blood vessel is damaged. If the vessel is internal, blood seeps into surrounding tissue, and a bruise forms. Where delicate blood vessels are near the surface of tissue, as they are in the nose, for example, a very slight injury or irritation may cause bleeding. For most people, minor bleeding causes no harm because the body soon stops it. It does his by means of three main mechanisms that act together. The nearby blood vessels contract, and restrict the flow of blood to the area of the wound. The platelets in the blood gather where the blood vessels are damaged, and stick to the vessel walls and to each other to form a plug. In addition, interlacing strands of a material called fibrin form in the damaged area. Blood cells are then trapped in the fibrin mesh and form a clot that seals the break and stops the bleeding.

In diseases that cause abnormal bleeding, one or more of the mechanisms that halt blood loss does not work right. Bleeding from a cut, which would normally stop within five or ten minutes, may continue for hours, or even days. Minor injuries may cause extensive bruising. There may be internal bleeding, and bleeding in the joints may produce acute pain and eventually cause crippling damage. Two of the most common of such disorders, hemophilia and thrombocytopenia, are discussed here.

A compulsion is an unreasonable need to behave in a certain way. An obsession is an idea or thought that lodges in the mind and cannot be forgotten, Obsessional mental activity often leads to compulsive behavior. At one time or another most people have minor obsessions and compulsions. On a certain day, for example, you cannot get a popular tune out of your head. You are obsessed , with it. Or you may irrationally feel compelled to walk to work every day on the same side of the street. Obsessions and compulsive actions become disorders only when they are so intense and persistent that they interfere with normal life.

What are the Symptoms?

Obsessions take hold gradually. You may become interested in something such as politics, religion, or hygiene. Next you find yourself brooding about it. Eventually you can think of little else. At that point, the obsession may begin to affect your behavior. If, for instance, you have become obsessed with the idea that housebreaking is rampant, you may feel a compulsion to test your front door again after you have already locked it securely. This is a comparatively harmless compulsion. Some people, however, might carry it beyond the limits of normality by getting out of bed repeatedly during the night in order to test the door over and over again.

Compulsive disorders often center on irrational fears. Some women, for example, are so obsessed with fear of pregnancy that they will not use a bathtub previously used by a man. Other people become obsessed with fear of “germs,” and wash their hands endlessly. Such a person may realize his or her behavior is irrational, but attempts to resist an overwhelming compulsion cause intense anxiety, which can be relieved only by giving in to the compulsion.

Medical opinion is divided on the effectiveness of drugs for serious obsessional or compulsive disorders. Antidepressant and tranquilizer medications, however, help to reduce depression and anxiety, which are symptoms that commonly accompany these disorders.

What should be done?

If you feel that any of your ideas or actions are slipping out of control, for example, if you cannot bring yourself to go to work because your customary route has been closed, consult your physician, who will probably refer you to a specialist for psychotherapy. Treatment for mild cases of this disorder is usually based on an effort to reassure you while trying gradually to discover what lies behind your compulsive behavior. Compulsions can sometimes be cured by a type of therapy that is known as “desensitization”.
